| Description:Hello All, This is Scotty a very average golfer from Leicestershire that is striving to get a lower handicap |
Well done Louis Oosthuizen, after playing 4 solid rounds he deserved to win the Open. But did anyone else feel let down by the lack of competition for this year’s open? Where was the late Tiger charge? Where was the leader putting his tee shot into the water, given everyone else in the field a chance?
Whilst I’m pleased for Louis, it did feel like a bit of a precession the last day. If only Rory managed to keep his head in the wind, next year for him me thinks!
As for my golf, I managed to win a pairs comp against friends 3&2, although it could have been completely different. Standing on the first tee, my swing seemed to disappear and my lovely 3 iron safe shot, turned into a nightmare as the first two tee shots struggled to get anywhere. Thankfully this improved as the round went on, and a chip-in at the 9th turned things my way. Big comp at the weekend to look forward to!!
Hello All,
The weekend was certainly the start of the new golf season for me. Off to my course, Purley Chase, for the first comp of the year. We were meet with perfect tees and greens, which gave confidence on chipping and putting, and the fairways only occasionally had standing water, so a good score was going to follow!
And it started in good form with a birdie 2 on hole 8 (only a couple of feet from an ace!), and this meant that I shared the pot for the 2's!! But then it sort of went Pete Tong. Not in my swing, as I was hitting the ball pretty well, but in the choices I made. I over hit both par 5's in two (I seem to follow the BM's tag line "Hit it hard, go find it, hit it hard again"), and this meant drops on both.
So an 87 overall is not the end of the world, but as always, it could have been so much better.

it must be nearly spring,Winter is never a busy time for golf, the sticks go away in November and then barely come out until March. In fact my clubs were used so infrequently that my golf bag started to grow it's own bacteria!
So, after coming back from a week skiing in Italy, I was so happy that the sun was out in full force. Off Ad and I went to Purley Chase for the first full 18 of the year.
After hitting balls all over the place at the range on Friday (200 yards between one sliced right and one pulled left!), hope were not high for a good score. In fact I even thought about "let's not score this one, lets just enjoy the round", but that's not me!
And the bad shots seemed to be all wasted down the range, as I started in a good fashion, a tap-in birdie on the second and a string of pars meant I turned the corner at 40.
The back nine went similar to the front, lots of pars and an eagle chance that just missed leaving another easy birdie. I came back in 39 to give my first 18 of the year in 79.
With my handicap being 19 this year, people better watch out in the comps, El Bandito is back!!!
Snow, snow, snow.........
Having not hit a ball in anger for nearly two months now, thoughts have turned from "I'll be ok next year" to "what's a swing path" and "what will my form be like next year". Maybe a trip down the range is in order and maybe even a MOT golf lesson.
Am I the only one who thinks that when I play next maybe all those imperfections will have gone through not playing, and when I come back I'll be like Lee Westwood? We shall see.... Maybe with the snow clearing at the weekend there may be a round, beacuse I need to play!
So winter is upon us, and as I headed out for my first round in a month a few things crossed my mind:
- Will my swing still be the same?
- How will the course play?
- Can the weather hold all day?
We the weather was dry and fine (and only a 7mph wind), the course was brilliant which was amazing with the amount of rain we've had recently. And as for my swing??? OOOH YEAH!!! Crushed my hybrid off the 1st tee to about 250 yards, and started par-par-par.
My driver was great all day, straight and long. My irons were going well, and if my putting wasn't ice cold a good score would have been on the cards. But I'm blaming my lack of touch on the frequency, or lack of it, of my play not on anything else.
It has inspired me to play more over the winter, as you can really go at the flag and not worry about it roling past. Target golf here we come!
So back I was to Purley Chase on Saturday for a round in the lovely sun. It's been a while since I played my own course, and that I've played without the wind blowing my shots left and right. And so I had a great round. Thought I'd played better than a 87, but the loss of a couple of balls hampered my scorecard.
And then on Sunday back out to Six Hills, a course that is always windy and always seems to be a bogey club to me. However with my driver working ok (with the help of the driving range net giving me some nice bounces) I was playing pretty well and went to the turn on 41 hits.
A tighter back nine with the impossible blind dog leg shot, meant a couple of 7's coming back, and lead to a 44, so a round of 85 (My best ever at six hills).
The worse thing about six hills is the standard of golfer hacking their way around a course. I can cope with bad players (we were all there once), but there is no excuse for bad attire. Reebok classics, shellsuit bottoms, bermuda shorts and t-shirts all on show!! They need some Bunker Mentality gear and quick!!!!!
Recently I had the chance to play in the Midland Roofing contractor's golf day at Fulford Heath. A lovely course, with really, really quick greens.
I had been worried a little about it as recently I've suffered a bad case of the shanks. However after hitting the range every day, I felt quite confortable with my swing. That was until the first hole.
A slightly pulled drive left me in the rough in front of a ditch, and for some reason I slashed at the ball, which lead to it falling straight into the hazzard. All was forgiven soon after, a 8 Iron left me 100 yards out. I thought I'd have a go at it with my lob wedge, and after three bounces it clattered into the flag and down into the hole for a 6.
The round continued in similar vain, the sublime and the rediculous. I drove a par 4 in one, and safely got a birdie and then on another hole I hit the first two tee shots OB. But that is where stableford is a great way of scoring. Another birdie soon followed, and I finished in the wind on 33 points.
I hadn't realised how the wind was affecting the scores until I got back and found out that 33 was a good score, but you still never know you've won until the presentation evening. And there it was, my victory and a nice prize which I've exchanged for a new driver.
Big thanks to my Dad for inviting me and all the society for making it a great day.
Thankfully the terrible run of bad golf came to the end at the weekend, as my Brother, dad and I headed out in torrential rain.
The round started in the right fashion with a bogey, par, bogey combination and was quickly followed by three pars on the bounce. Thankfully after the range on Friday, in which every other shot was a shank, my golf settled down and the straight hitting came back. My driving was going well, and my putting rather average. Then the rain really hit, and the course became very heavy. Leaving me shattered and barely able to swing a club on the last two holes, but at least I made it through!
Things I'm looking forward to this month:
- A golf day somewhere in the Midlands
- The sun to come back
- New BM gear, loving the stuff they're previewing on their facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=logo#/bunkermentality?ref=nf)
Catch you all later!
I've played two competitions so far, and it's been a bit hit and miss. However I've found recently that I'm 9th in the league for the Purley Chase Green Blazer, so my target for the rest of the season is to play in more comps to get higher in this league.

My golf at the moment seems to be a little bit off. Not sure what's happening in my swing, but isn't it always the way that as soon as you think you've got the game sorted, the golf gods bite you in the bum. So I'm hoping to work on that this week down the range and at the course on Saturday.
Love my Bunker Mentality bag tag, and also all the new gear they're bringing out, if you've not seen it yet check out their Facebook page for exclusive images.
Here's to the sun, which has to shine in August as it's been away on holiday for the whole of July!! Good golf everyone!
When do you change your clubs?
- When you've had a bad round?
- When you've seen something better?
- When you've become a better player?
Having just turned 28 (yes it basically 30!) I decided that I deserved a better club to hit those little white dots with, and decided after years on envying my Dad's Ping clubs that this was the way to go. So over to the exciting world of ebay to try and win some decent clubs for a knock off price. After searching for far too long I dropped in on a combo set of I5's and S58's. Managed to get them for an absolute steal.
So the weekend was the first chance of trying them out. I wasn't expecting too much. After an under average set of 100 balls at the local driving range, I just wanted to get used to the clubs. Imagine my happiness to shoot a 79, including two birdies and many pars. I found the clubs forgiving but also gave me the ability to hunt the flag stick. Hopefully these will be the key to a success in the comp on Saturday.
The Open this weekend
Well the third major of the season is this weekend and who is your money on? Kraymer is on fire, Westwood not too far away, Paddy looking for three in a row…..
My money, for what it's worth, is my reverse name sake Adam Scott. Apart from one bad round at the weekend, he would have won the Scottish Open.
and the golfing is easy,The golf gods are looking down on me at the moment. After an OK May, June started with a trip to France and a game at St Cyr. An awesome golf course with the quickest greens I've ever played on. Mat and Ad were my compainions for the course, and after a shakey start with borrowed clubs, I finally hit my groove on the 5th hole. Went around all the par 3 level, which was great for the scorecard, and finished the round shattered and on 91.
Long days and nights are with us, and I used this to my Advantage as Dad and I sneaked a quick 18 holes at Purley Chase last Tuesday. The greens were perfect for me, soft to take a pitch, but quick enough for good putting. Starting with two birdies set the standard as I blitzed my handicap and went round in 76 (four over).
Things I'm looking forward to in the next few weeks
My Birthday weekend is on the 3rd July, and I'm hoping to do an east V west ryder cup style tournament with my family and friends.
A round on Wednesday at Lingdale, a lovely course
Trying my new Ping Wedge.
Anyway that's it for now, so I'll catch you all later!
Well after years of wanting to play in my first competition, I finally got chance this weekend. With the sun shining it's way through the clouds and the wind dropping, I headed out on Saturday to play in a bogey comp.
Playing from the blues for the first time was amazing, and after the first 4 holes I was struggerling to get my game going. I was two down after 6 after hitting the rough with my drive, and never really had a chance of getting the ball back in play. But then my game clicked into gear and managed to get a shot back before the turn.
Suddenly I hit two GIR in a row and left me with two birdie putts. Suddenly I was two up against the course.
My putting was going well again and on the 15th I managed to putt in for a birdie to get me to three up on the course. However another dodgy tee off caused me with more problems and I drop one at 16th. A final dropped shot on 18 left me 1 up against the course and meant that my handicap has drop one stroke.
Rematch of England V Rest of Europe
Last year my good friends Ad and Celine got married, and as part of the wedding Ad and his other best man Mat headed over to the Arden to play in pair against Ed and myself.
Well with Mat back over from France we had chance again to head out to play at Purley Chase. Ad's shoulder has been bad and Ed hasn't played for a while so most holes it was down to Mat and I fighting it out. Mat with his shiny new driver was on great form and managed to hit his best score a 78. Unfortunately my 83 couldn't really compete.
HOWEVER.....I DID GET AN EAGLE ON THE 15th. A drive of 300+ yards followed by an Iron to leave me with a putt of ten feet to hole for an eagle. Happy days.
Golf does not get better than playing with your mates, in a close game, good weather and ace BM gear.
This should be a late night Channel 5 series.
I've been playing above my handicap for the last few rounds. Hitting straight drives and irons, good chipping and average putting. Well the golf gods really made the wheels fall off my game last Saturday.
On a windy course in Cheshire, I managed to head out for a quick 9 with my brother-in-law (an ex-England lacrosse player and general banter legend). Now Phil is very competitive, and would never let it go if he beat me, so there is always a certain degree of pressure from the start. Especially as I had to take a provisional on the first tee!
My golf truly went Pete Tong, and started to pick up a draw that was turned into a hook by the gusty conditions. I spent most of the round searching for my ball in the rough, but my chipping and putting was keeping me in the match.
It went to the last hole, with me needing at least half to win the round. After Phil chipped within 10 feet with his chip, I managed to get mine to around 12 feet. And my putter saved me again, hitting the back of the cup and dropping; quickly followed by Ryder Cup style celebration from yours truly (jumping on the green is bad form though isn't it?).
Back to the range this week to get the straight game back!!!
Which one do you prefer? I love them both, and it's been really nice recently to play some match play against friends.
Having played a few different courses recently, Saturday's round was a trek over to Melton Mowbray to play Melton Mowbray golf course. It has to be the tightest course I've played in a while, but it was tight with other fairways and greens rather than hazards and trees. And when you're playing a +25mph wind it's really hard to keep the ball going in a straight directions.
Ryan had the task of being my partner for a four ball with Jason and Carl being the opponents. And for once Ryan and I we're in sync (or out of it if that makes sense), and when I had a bad hole he played well and vice versa. We took it on the 16th 4&2, but Carl finally got his driver working towards the end so if a rematch is in the near future I think it may be a different result!
Is there anything better than leaving work and heading straight down to the course an see how many holes you can sneak in before it get's too dark.
Well that's what I did Firday night, and I managed to get 9 in just over an hour at only a couple over par. That is what golf is all about for me, the relaxing rounds where you just let your swing thoughts go and enjoy the vista as much as the golf.
Bank Holiday are great, and this one again lead to 18 holes with friends. 5 is an awkward number to play in, a 2 and a 3. But being in the lowest 2 handicaps, Carl and I headed off before Dad, Ad and Mark in the three.
I was really chuffed with my general play (my chipping was brilliant all day!) and went round in 84 which is about my average. I even beat Carl 3&1 which was nice as Gary and him beat me and Ryan only a week earlier.
I LOVE BANK HOLIDAYS!!!
Is there anything better than a bank holiday, and Easter is the best. 4 days off from work, which is plenty of time to fit two rounds in, as I continued my quest for a new golf club.

Thursday was the start of my long weekend, and finally got to play at Atherstone. And I have to say after a less than warm reception (no one there until 9, and the course looking rather quiet) I headed out for 18 really nice holes. I was really pleased with the course, it was really well put together and boy was it hard! But with my golf starting really well this year, I hit a coupe of birdies and pars to finish on 81.
So Atherstone seemed to be my new club, apart from when Dad and I went to become a member we were told that we can't just pay or money and join but we had to have an interview with the captain and vice captain. WHY? Why on earth do we need to be ok'd by a captain to join a club. We're paying our money, surely we don't need to jump through hoops and go and have an interview with the captain. Anyway, that put me right off, and so we drove the quick trip to Purley Chase and joined there. And I couldn't be happier with that decision.
Monday concluded the weekend with a 84 round Purley chase. I didn't really have my A-game going, but started well and got up-and-down for par a few times so all wasn't too bad.
I'm now looking forward to this weekend and I'm playing 18 on Saturday at Purley Chase and on Sunday I'm at Lingdale. So here to another long weekend of golf!!
Hermitage Golf Weekend 2009
----------------------------

Every year since 2005 my Volleyball club has had it's Golf day. Normally this is on a cold wet April day, and the best thing to look forward to is the warm club house at the end of the round. Not this year!!
This year it was split into two days over a weekend and included Purley Chase and Lingdale as the courses. It was such a good weekend, good weather, some great golf and some interesting tops (Ryan has caught the BM bug...He wears it well!).

My golf was up an down, much better on the Sunday but myself and Ryan lost out to Carl and Gary 2&1, with me missing the vital putt on 17!
Highlights of the round included a nice 6 Iron approach to leave myself with a chance of a birdie, Gary still not hitting a par-3 GIR, Carl hitting a drive well over 300 yards and Ryan thinning a ball that ran along the ground onto the green and shouting "bite".
Well done all that were involved. Not quite blue skyz and 65's but it's the way golf should be played!
